“Games of the Future and their role in mass culture”

Topic: Though computer games have almost three decade history, the game industry is still in its cradle. Nevertheless the tendencies of the recent years show that games become a part, and a rather significant part, of our daily life. How many hours a day do you spend on playing games averagely? And what about reading books? Self-training? Parenting? Games consume more and more processor time, and not only that of computer gics, but lately of absolutely casual and “unenlightened” auditory as well. Games slowly but surely exclude TV the way it had once excluded radio. And as any other information environment, they start forming their own social reality, new culture. A person spending two hours a day playing gets more than five hundred hours of informational influence a year, and the one very concentrated and targeted. Just to compare: this time equals to ten university courses of lectures which are usually learned superficially if visited.
Another couple of years will pass, and gaming will start to involve vast masses, merge with other mass media, become a part of educational process, industry, all the spheres of informational influence. Out of a simple kind of entertainment they will form a part of a broad social reality. Under this lecture we are to discuss the way it will happen and the results it threatens.
